Burdens supplier Enviromesh specialises in gabion and mattress products which offer practical as well as visually sympathetic products for exteriors.

In a nutshell, the Enviromesh provides BBA certified gabion and mattress products and technical solutions using bespoke in-house design software (written by Roger Farmer of Enviromesh) to support architects, consulting engineers, local authorities, utilities, developers and civil engineering contractors.

These solutions encompass gabion retaining walls, erosion control structures on water courses, acoustic barriers, free-standing perimeter walls and architectural gabion claddings to buildings through to garden gabions. The whole operation is supported by visits to clients’ offices and by site visits where required.

Performance

From the original three-year business plan, turnover has already far exceeded expectations. Sales have grown year on year, with 2009/2010 seeing record sales with healthy returns even during the current economic climate. This has been achieved through a maintained level of commodity sales, supported increasingly by a growing level of technical design work both at home and abroad. This increased workload has meant the company has decided to increase the team’s technical resource, and this technical design work is seen as where the business’ future growth is likely to come from.

Prestigious Gabion Projects

A variety of interesting schemes have been completed by Enviromesh. In terms of gabion retaining walls, for example, the project at a new travellers site at Bridies Tan for East Sussex County Council required the design of a 5 m-high wall filled with local cobbles. As the rounded nature of the fill and its tendency to move made it difficult to contain, the Gabion 27 system was chosen as its smaller compartments helped contain the fill. The wall had to be designed with a flush face to prevent children climbing it, and a combination of heavier meshes was used to prevent vandalism.

Enviromesh was chosen because of the company’s proven design service and ability to offer the authority a 70-year life expectancy on the products.

On the international front, the company has made significant inroads and has already designed and supplied a number of schemes in developing nations. The first and most notable project was a 10 m-high × 180 m-long retaining wall in Kampala, Uganda. Similar works have been supplied by the firm in Ethiopia, Kenya, Bangladesh, Ghana, Togo and, more recently, Cameroon which is the biggest order to date.
