A growing number of Britons have made the decision to ‘self build’ as opposed to conventional methods of home purchasing - in fact last year over 14,000 new homes were self built, more than many individual volume house builders are building.

With Burdens fast becoming a prominent force in the self build arena, group partner companies are supporters of the new online resource for this sector - the Self Build Portal.

At the launch of the Self Build Portal, Housing Minister Grant Shapps announced a package of new support to self home builders and was joined by NaSBA representatives, would-be self builders and a number of well known professionals including Kevin McCloud, designer and presenter of Channel 4’s ‘Grand Designs’ together with Arthur Burden, Chairman, Burdens Ltd.

"This website is the result of a joint initiative between the Government and the custom build housing industry. The site provides encouragement and impartial advice to people who want to build their own home to suit their family’s needs. It forms part of the Government’s Housing Strategy to bring about a custom build housing revolution.

Building your own home should be easier for everyone. I want to help people, like you, fulfil their dreams of building their own home. We are near the bottom of the European league of custom builders. I want to see us moving up the table and double the number of custom build homes over the next decade.”
