Farming is vital to the UK economy, and is now the largest onshore primary industry in the country. It is part of a food industry that in manufacturing terms far outweighs traditional industries such as steel, shipbuilding or cars. It is intensive, highly mechanised, and efficient by European standards, producing around 60% of food needs with less than 1.4% of the labour force.
In 2007 the total area of land on agricultural holdings was 17.4 million hectares, some 73 per cent of the total land area in the United Kingdom. In 2007 the total farm labour force in the United Kingdom was 526,200, down by 80,000 on a decade earlier. From this figure there totalled 152,000 full-time farmers and 198,000 part-time farmers, the remaining being farmer’s spouses and seasonal workers. These figures represent a significant proportion of overall rural employment and one that helps to maintain our rural communities.

Burdens Ownership Model – A Better Way To Do Business
Burdens are a privately owned company with shareholding divided between a charitable foundation, the people that work for the organisation and the founding families.
The charitable foundation helps causes at home and in developing countries, recognising the important role that the charitable sector now fulfils in society and, equally our responsibility to the creation of a fairer world.
All of Burdens employees (over 1,000 people) are shareholders in the business and this equity both rewards and encourages their long term commitment and innovation.
Working together and supporting the world in which we all live and operate really does provide a ‘better way to do business' and this ethos is at the heart of the Burdens culture and communicated through the company’s values:
Burdens Agricultural – Putting The Customer First
Our stores form a vital part of the local community and our extensive product range allows for a one stop shop, so different to many other merchants.
Our diversity will never come at the cost of our core business but Burdens Agricultural will have the same priority as our core business at every site we open. We are very proud that the business has gradually evolved into a multifaceted rural retailer on three established principles: Good Quality, Good Value and Good Service.
Advice – It is our belief that no product can be sold without the availability of good advice and support on request, this is where the partnership with others works well and they are available at all times to give this advice, The dedicated team of people available to us is more than happy to help the customer throughout their purchasing decision and will assist when called upon to give technical advice to all aspects of our product offering.
Quality – We aim to supply only the best in terms of product quality because we know that our loyal customers have entrusted Burdens to deliver this promise.
Value – Coupled with quality we strive to provide value throughout our product range - this must be tangible and realistic.
We are increasingly looking to provide multi-purpose sites for our customers' “one stop shop”.
