A client needed a specialist Geogrid solution for a piling platform, due to extremely challenging ground conditions at a housing and care home development in Wigan.
Several hundred driven piles had to be installed to take loadings from the residential and care home buildings. The initial specification for a 3,200m2 area included a 40kn Biaxial Geogrid at the base of a 660mm stone platform, which was an expensive proposition. Burdens Geotechnics team were able to introduce a value method calculation and provide a 40% reduction in platform thickness, demonstrating significant savings on both excavated and imported materials.
The re-design process took just 5 working days, offering not only a truly value-engineered solution, but one that was able to demonstrate a reduction in carbon emissions across the full piling process.
